I am a sophomore in high school and I’m very interested in computers and I love working with them. I plan on going to Penn State Univeristy majoring in Computer Science and Engineering. What types of things does computer science include and what jobs are available? Also, is computer science hardware or software or both?

There aren’t too many high-paying jobs for this. In fact, many of the jobs have been outsourced to China and India. The problem with computer programming and jobs that are done digitally is that it can be done anywhere, it doesn’t have to be done in an office with a staff of people in America, who you have to give healthcare and all of that. By outsourcing these jobs to India and China, they’re able to pay them very little and don’t have to worry about a lot of the costs that they would have to do maintaining the lifestyle that the average American worker demands.

Anyway, if you’re still passionate about this, you could become a head designer for a computer company, like Microsoft or Apple, but you’d have to be really smart and creative to do this, since you’d basically be in the forefront and inventing things and coming up with new langauges and coding.

i’ve seen i a cafe that one computer is being controlled by the host, and i can see the mouse pointer of the controlled computer is moving. i tried to do the remote connection at home but the computer that i control is logged off while i control it using my host computer. why can’t i see the desktop of the computer that i control? i wanna see the mouse moving while i control it using my host computer.. pls help if anyone knows how to do it.. thanks in advance!! icon smile how to use remote desktop connection while the computer i control is still running?

You can’t do this using Remote Desktop. There is free software that allows you to do this. I personally used this and it works like you want it to.
This is the website help page:

http://www.uvnc.com/docs/uvnc-server.html

This is the download page:
http://www.uvnc.com/component/jdownloads/summary/4/4.html (Assuming you have a 32 bit OS. If not, you’ll have to visit this same website and select the appropriate download link for your OS)
*When you download and start installing it, there will be a components page during the wizard installation. Make sure to download "server only" on the computer you want to control. Then go to your computer that you want to control it from. Go to the above download link and on the component part of the installation wizard, select "Viewer only."*
You first have to download VNC Server on the computer you want to control. You’ll also have to set a password to connect to that computer. When you first install the server part of this software, the server property box will pop up. All you really need to do is set a password and then hit apply, then OK. Also, at the very beginning of the installation, it will give you the option to install as a service. Do this if you want to be able to control this computer at any time. If you don’t install it as a service, you will have to launch the VNC server software everytime the computer is turned on or restarted.
Then download VNC Viewer on the computer you want to control it from. Type in the computer’s name and then hit connect. It will prompt you for password you created in the VNC server software. You’ll then be able to control the computer in real time. Sorry if this is confusing!

0 Educational Technology: Not Just ComputersThis is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com

We received a question from a listener about how American schools use educational technology. There is not a simple answer.

It depends on the subject and level of students, of course. But it also depends on the interest and training of the teachers, and the goals and budgets of the schools.

Schools are almost all connected to the Internet. But some have more technology, and use it more, than others. For example, some schools use computers for activities like video conferencing, to bring the world into the classroom.

And some classrooms are equipped with things like a Smart Board, a kind of interactive whiteboard. Interactive whiteboards are large displays for presentations.

They connect to a computer and can operate by touch. They can be used for documents or writing or to project video.

Some teachers are trying creative new ways to teach with devices like iPods and mobile phones.

But educators say the most important thing, as always, is the content.

Yet technology can have special importance in some cases.

Cosmobot is a therapy robot. It stands about half a meter tall and has a blue body and a friendly face with big eyes.

One child who works with it is six-year-old Kevin Fitzgerald. Kevin has developmental dyspraxia; he has difficulty moving his mouth and tongue.

He works with Carole Semango-Sprouse as he uses a set of buttons attached to a computer. He can make the silent robot move forward, backward or around in circles.

Kevin’s mother thinks the robot has had a calming influence, helping her son get along better with his friends.

Cosmobot was developed by AnthroTronix. Corinna Lathan started the company ten years ago to work with children with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities.

Children become friends with the robot, she says. That can have a big effect on their behavior, helping them work harder and longer in therapy sessions.

Corinna Lathan is currently working with a British company to develop other socially assistive robots.

She says they are still considered research tools in the United States. They are not used as much as in places like Britain and Japan. But she hopes to change that.

And that’s the VOA Special English Education Report. You can comment on our reports at our Web site, voaspecialenglish.com.

Would Microsoft Netmeeting be the best thing to use? I want something that I can setup on my end, and my customer can login on their end and see me my mouse clicking and moving around on the screen. They will obviously need to have a speaker phone in order to hear me talking. Also, at the end of each lesson I want to somehow switch things around so I can see their mouse clicking and moving around on the screen.
That will allow me to quiz them and ensure they are doing the steps correctly.

Netmeeting will permit you to accomplish what you want. You just need to enable desktop sharing. When you want to be the ‘instructor’, you will share your desktop with the student. When you want to watch what the student does, you will need to let the student enable desktop sharing. Just be aware that bandwidth is a critical consideration… both of you should be on broadband (DSL or cable modem) and should have similar configuration.

If your student does not have the same software on his/her computer, and will be executing the actual mouseclicks and data entry on your computer, you will need to grant them control of your screen through Netmeeting.

I hope this is helpful information. I can help you through the settings, if required.

Ask the librarian where to find the books in the subjects you are interested in and perform searches of their database. Read other books from those authors. Also do Google searches, BarnesAndNoble.com & Amazon.com. Google: "hobbies; list"

View www.wikihow.com MAKING FRIENDS Join mutual interest groups, clubs, sports, gym; take courses in subjects that interest you, and approach others with sensible questions, to see what they’re like. Hypnosis is merely a heightened state of suggestibility, in which you are better able to communicate with your subconscious mind; view http://myfavoriteinterests.com/hypnosis/ about what it is, and isn’t.

85% of people are suggestible to some degree; 15% – 20% highly so, and 15% – 20% aren’t much at all, so you could either preferably seek professional hypnotherapy, or, if not an option, hypnosisdownloads.com has one about: meeting people, conversation starter, making small talk, becoming popular, & overcome self consciousness, shyness and social anxiety, internet addiction, etc.
Professional advice is to only use 1, or 2 at a time.

Realise that you may well be using it as a more entaining, or safer substitute for real life, with its risks, problems, work, and boredom.

Set a sensible limit, such as 2 – 3 hrs, and use an alarm, or reminder in your PDA, or cell/mobile phone for 10 mns earlier, so you can finish. Have some things ready to do, then.

If you don’t stick to this, no internet next day.
